Sting Tryouts

Sting 10U/12U/14U Tryouts for the Summer and Fall 2024 seasons!

When:

  • 14U tryouts (2009/10 birthdays) will be on 4/21 @ 2-4pm (pitchers and catchers should arrive at 1:45PM to warm up)

  • 12U tryouts (2011/12 birthdays) will be on 4/28 @ 12:30-2pm (pitchers and catchers should arrive at 12:15 to warm up)

  • 10U tryouts (2013 birthdays or younger) will be on 4/28 @ 10-12pm (pitchers and catchers should arrive at 9:45 to warm up)

Where: Cougar Field East, 1259 Brighton Ave, Albany, CA 94706
(behind Albany Middle School; allow yourself five minutes to walk from parking lot to field)

Other Details:
  • Parents/Guardians will be asked to leave the tryout after a brief meeting with the Sting Commissioner
  • Eligibility:
    • 10U age eligibility is anyone who was 10 or under on 12/31/23
    • 12U age eligibility is anyone who was 11 or 12 on 12/31/23
    • 14U age eligibility is anyone who was 13 or 14 on 12/31/23
    • 10U and 12U participants must have played in the 2024 ABGSL rec season 
    • The 14U tryout will be open to anyone interested, but priority will be given to previous Sting and ABGSL players
  • Player Availability and Schedule:

    • For 10U and 12U teams:

      • May: Once a week practices start immediately after teams are formed in early May. These are typically Sunday afternoons while players finish up the rec season.

      • June-July: When the rec season finishes in early June, Sting season kicks in with their full schedule: two weekday practices plus a weekly clinic and either a Sunday afternoon practice or weekend tournaments

    • For the 14U team: 

      • May: The season will tentatively kick off on Sunday May 19th with two weekday practices and one Sunday practice. We may play our first tournament during Memorial Day weekend.

      • June-July: The schedule will be similar to May but with the addition of a weekly clinic to sharpen player skills

    • Sting intends to play about five summer tournaments which typically last all day Saturday and Sunday.  Possible tournament weekends (in addition to a 14U Memorial Day weekend tournament) will be: June 15-16, June 22-23, June 29-30, July 13-14, and July 20-21 or July 27-28, and are subject to change.  Four of the five tournaments will be within 90-minute driving distance from Berkeley-Albany. The fifth tournament will be an overnight trip! The summer season tentatively ends Sunday July 21 or July 28 with the last tournament.

    • As Sting is a short and fast-paced season, the expectation is that players commit at a higher level than during the rec season. They should be present for all practices and tournaments. However, if necessary, players can miss up to one week of practice (or three practices) and one tournament per season, excluding illness and injury. The registration form will give you the opportunity to highlight dates that you are not available. Sting is a major commitment, particularly in June and July.

  • Sting is looking for players with a combination of hustle, positive attitude, teamwork and softball skills
