Alameda Red Storm 12, Dart Vend Bumptious Bears 1
The Alameda Red Storm lived up to their name when Danielle Carmon and Anna Varghese thundered solid hits for RBIs. Beth Matteucci and Jennifer Stoudt hit with the sting of lightning as they each had 2 monster hits and RBIs. Bumptious Bear Eliza Stuber ran as fast as the wind in stealing two bases against a catcher with a superior arm. Sasha Ginzburg twice scooped out low throws, stretching at first to save three outs. Fiona Delgado backhanded one at 2nd base for an out. Bears catcher Camille Jackson had an awesome day of blocked and scooped balls as catcher, making an unassisted out at home, and scoring the lone Bumptious run.
Older Division
Sweet Potatoes Peelers 10 vs. Adobe Black Magic 0
Despite a mid-game rain delay and a spontaneous intersquad Duck-Duck-Goose game, the Sweet Potato Peelers shut out the Adobe Black Magic in a hard fought 10-0 game. The Peelers were led by Maddie Cousens' 3 hits, including 2 doubles. Ellie Arkin started the Peelers offense by driving in Sydney Knudsen with a bunt hit in the first inning. Peeler Meagan Tokunaga began the shut-out by pitching an effortless first inning. Magician Jenna Brotsky, winner of the weekday game ball for outstanding fielding, snared a hard hit ball at 2d and pegged out the batter. Magic teammate Annalise Finney saved 2 runs: first, by holding a runner at 3d before tagging out the batter on a dropped 3d strike and, later by covering 1st on a bunt fielded by pitcher Lisie Dohrer. Krista Smithers capped off the Magic exploits with a diving catch of a popped up bunt and followed with a smash single and her signature slide as she stole 2 bases.
Strategic Economic Panthers 14, Tulip Hardwood Belt Sanders 3
The Belt Sanders pitcher Sonja Schoenberger started the game off. At their first up to bat, Belt Sander Zoe Fiddler made a nice steal to second base. Panther Caitlin Taffe had a base hit to second and two RBIs. Panther Kelsey Fredrikson made a high fly base hit to center field for two RBIs. In the second Belt Sander Sita Wong made a great catch of a pop fly while the Belt Sanders also managed to steal second. In the third, Belt Sander Helen Mason calmly snagged a pop fly. In the third inning, Panther Maggy DiCostanzo hit a high fly to center field bringing in two RBIs. In the bottom of the fourth inning Belt Sander Katie Tick caught a pop fly and the Belt Sanders tagged a player out at third base. It was an exciting game for both teams!
San Marco Slammers 7 Counterforce Lightning 6
In a heartbreaking loss to the Slammers, the Lightning's bats exploded and defense was electric. Lightning pitcher Carol Sturgeon struck out two and hit a towering double to put the Lightning ahead in the 4th inning. Giselle Moreno's spectacular play at home plate and line drive double in the 5th inning kept Lightning in the game. Lightning Adrian Gebhart smashed a base hit, scoring a run; Ayla Nietschmann crushed a single, then stole second, eventually scoring. Lightning Johanna Heyer reached base, then with blazing speed stole second and third and, with a perfect slide, stole home. Unfortunately no information about the Slammers' individual performances was available.
Middle Division
Berkeley Orthodontic Wicked Wires 4, Arkin Tilt Terminators 3
The Wicked Wires and the Terminators braved the raindrops to play an exciting well-matched game. The Terminators came out swinging in the first inning and scored three runs with RBI singles by Elise Hartinger, Jane Huff, and Shira Rothman. In the bottom of the 1st, Terminator pitcher Ashley LaRosa struck out 2 players and then assisted for the 3rd out with Nina Magnuson at 1st. The Wicked Wires came back with a flurry of hits in the 2nd inning, starting with singles by Celia Greene and Sofia Cullen and finishing with a RBI double by Siobhan Bauer and a 2 RBI single by Sarah Hoynes. Alexandra Spencer-Wong showed an excellent first outing as pitcher for the Wires.
Prins Chiropractic Bulldogs 12, Red Oak Realty Rascals 0
In a remarkable team effort, every Bulldog batter garnered at least one hit. In the first, Rascal Lena Nitsan singled. Also in the first, Bulldog Kate Moore drove in Katie Lyons. Bulldog Mia Jauregui's grounder scored Ellie Brumbaum, but Rascal Brooke Tannahill's throw to Kiana Walker forced out Moore at second. Bulldogs Anna Moore and Catherine Cove singled to load the bases. Bulldog Lindsey Baker batted in Jauregui, and Bulldog Julie Moorad did the same for Moore and Cove. In the second, Rascal Jordan Baker singled. Bulldogs Olivia Duncan, Cory Labov, Colleen Navellier, Claire Shellem and Tamar Degen-Nosek knocked consecutive hits, with Navellier scoring Duncan and Shellem driving in Labov. Lyons hit it sharply to Tannahill, who threw it to Rascal Gilliam Sweeney for the out, as Navellier scored. Brumbaum drove in Degen-Nosek. The third featured singles by Bulldogs Baker, Moorad and Labov, doubles by Kate Moore and Jauregui, and a triple by Anna Moore. With bases loaded, Rascal Laurel Handler-Vosen hurled a clutch strike out to end the game.
Impact Fund Maximum Impact 6, Nolo Sharks 3.
The Maximum Impact hosted the Sharks on Saturday at Fielding field. The Sharks showed prowess at the plate, with strong hitting by Shayna Weimar and Roisin Shannon to start the game. Sofia Zaidman, Molly Greene and Julia Martinelli all reached first base later in the game. Samantha Abkin and Weimar both batted for doubles and RBIs in the second. Shark pitcher Jenna Guffy fielded a grounder and threw to Ellis Garey at first to retire one runner. Guffy later engineered a double play, throwing to Martinelli at first for one out, who threw to Zaidman at the plate to tag the runner and save the run. The Impact also showed strength in the field. Impact pitcher Barbara McCray struck out two batters and fielded a grounder to throw to Jennie Olson at second to end the first inning. Impact pitcher Morgan Rose repeated the feat in the third, striking out two and throwing to Abigail Green for the third out at the plate. Alena Ennis and McCray both snagged fly balls for outs, and Clara Obstfeld's good fielding retired a runner at first with a strong throw to Olson. Reid Schnider, Gabriela Steiner, Natalia Aldaco and Leah Henry contributed to the win with hits and smart baserunning.
Younger Division
Friedman Brueggemeyer Cougars 22, Zonta Club Zooming Zebras 12.
Pesky raindrops did not dampen the enthusiasm of the Zonta Club Zooming Zebras and the Friedman Brueggemeyer Cougars. The Cougars showed solid hitting and base running throughout the game, led by Madeleine Pauker, Gemma Hunt and Nora Killian. Cougar pitcher Julia Foster and catcher Reyna Fa-Kaji had a great defensive game, teaming to get two runners out at home plate. Zebras Margaret English and Jasmine Masten led the Zooming Zebra defense, providing several critical outs. Base hits by Zebras Emma Hurlbert, Claire Harper and English fueled the Zebra offense.
Dr. Brehnan's Toothless Tigers 17, Vivian Lopez Vipers 17
On a cloudy, breezy day at Fielding Field, the air was cool but the softball play was hot. The Tigers came out snarling, with solid hitting by Annelise Albert-Hall, but a strong hit by Tiger Ming Horn was thwarted by fine Viper defense. Viper Sailaja Varrma got the Vipers going with an RBI in the bottom of the 1st; Tiger pitcher Megan Foley made a nice play to 1st base for an out. Colleen Hamilton-Lecky made a sweet play to save a Viper run in the 2nd. Molly Cohen had a solid 3rd inning at 3rd base, getting two outs for the Tigers. Sofia DiBenedetto sprayed some Viper venom, teeing-off with the bases loaded and later scoring on a hit by Liana Rohlfing-McKenzie. The two well-matched teams played to a hard fought 17-17 tie.
On the Beam Leopards 16, Five Little Monkeys Dementors 14
The Dementors' strong hitting and skillful defense challenged the Leopards in this hard-fought duel. Leopard pitcher Josephine Hass started strong, catching the game's first hit, then throwing to first baseman Talia Rossi for the third out. In the bottom of the first, Dementor first base Claire Simpson tagged a Leopard runner out. Dementor pitcher Lena Mayer snared a wicked line drive for the third out. In the second, the Dementors were almost unstoppable, with Emily Cain's strong flyball clearing second base to bring in the first of many runs. Leopard first base Aya Newman nabbed the ball to make the only out. The Leopards raced to catch up with solid hits by Josephine Hass and Maggie Gallager, and a bunt by Newman to bring Rossi home. Leopard teamwork in the third resulted in three outs at first, thanks to first base Rosa Rossi-Goldthorpe's reliable coverage. Dementor Kelly Barry's alert hustling brought her safely on first by half a step. Dementor Sierra Lee kept the fourth inning rally going with a well-placed grounder. Leopard Newman's sacrifice grounder moved her teammates around the bases at the end of this exciting game.
Micro Division
Andronico Blue Jays v Autumn Press Stars
The Micro girls are improving each week! In the game between the Andronico Blue Jays and the Autumn Press Stars, they all exhibited some fine hitting and fielding. In her first at-bat of the season, Blue Jay Rose Micallef hit the ball hard to second base, and followed up in the next inning with another good hit. Blue Jay Lia Renauer, made an unassisted put-out at third base when she fielded a grounder and tagged the bag. Blue Jay Julia English had a great day at the plate, hitting the ball hard several times. And as catcher, Blue Jay Lila Simpson charged a slow dribbler and brought it back to home plate to get the runner out. Finally for the Blue Jays, Darcy Miller got her biggest hit of the day in the last inning with a line-drive to third base. Stars Bonnie Coulman, Georgia Seltzer and Hannah Murray made solid hits, followed by solid base running by Star Taryn Woodall.
Andronico's Bluejays v Hammond Events Green Gators
The Bluejays played the Green Gators Saturday at Cordonices Park. Bluejay Raleigh Williams had the first run of the game, which proved inspirational for her team as Lindsey Wiser, Jazmyn Nevarez and Jordan Hanson all had strong hits and runs. In the field, WIlliams and Tayah Blanck showed good team work to put a Gator out at second.
