Interleague Division
Rodeo 5, San Marco Slammers 4
Slammers Sabina Khan and Maddie Cousins provided a powerful leadoff combo to spark the. Slammers to four runs, which fell short in a 5-4 loss to Rodeo in their first interleague game of the season. Sadie Oliver-Gray and Shelby LaRosa split the five innings of pitching, striking out 10 and giving up only 5 hits.
Alameda Blazers 23, Tulip Hardwood Belt Sanders 9
The Belt Sanders had a strong start against the Blazers in their first Interleague game of the season, but fell behind when sharp Blazer groundballs eluded the Belt Sanders' gloves. Belt Sander pitcher Elana Jacobs-Pontecorvo smoked on the mound, striking out two and tagging out another in one inning. Second pitcher Lilah Hubbard struck out two batters and caught three pop flys! Kate Carter and Zoe Fiddler caught mitt-popping fastballs. Emma Rotem contributed great fielding and speedy steals to second and third. Helen Mason added daring base running, impressive base stealing and tagged out a runner. With great hits by Angelina Herrera, Katie Tick, and Sita Wong, the Belt Sanders battled mightily against the dominant Blazers.
Adobe Black Magic 5, Oakland Bad Girls 4
Every Adobe Black Magic woman contributed to the victory over Interleague opponent Oakland Bad Girls. Magicians Lisie and Valerie Dohrer started things off with twin at bats in the 2nd -- walking and stealing their way around the bases for the first runs of the game. Krista Smithers followed suit in the 3rd, making a major league slide into home. Corey Chin smacked the ball in the 5th inning and scored Black Magic's final run. The Bad Girls put the game in jeopardy in the 6th inning until Magician Lily Meryash's throw to 1st base Smithers ended the inning, earning Meryash the game ball. Magician Elizabeth Tulsky threw 4 perfect innings, with nine strikeouts, no walks and no hits. Oakland Bad Girls Sweetie Washington and Arizine Lee each scored a run and had outstanding pitching performances of their own.
Older Division
San Marco Slammers 4, Dart Vend Bumptious Bears 3
Slammer Sadie Oliver-Gray celebrated her birthday smashing a double and shutting down hitters with blazing Ks. Zoe Oliver-Gray grounded in a run. Latrina Senegal applied a fearless tag at home to prevent a run. Kate Atkinson singled, and snuck around three bases, stealing home for the winning run. Bumptious Bear Zoe Pollock grabbed a ball for a groundout at first and caught a towering fly in right. Yasmin Louie smothered a rocket of a grounder at first, recovered, and cooly stepped on first for the out. Camille Dyhr caught a high fly in left and hoovered a beautiful groundout at second. Kumari Chadha, drove in her team's second run in the crucial bottom of the fifth, later showing her super baserunning by stealing home for their third run.
Strategic Economics Panthers 9, Sweet Potatoes 8
Sweet Potato pitcher Fiona Riley struck out four in the first two innings, then in the second hit a single, stole a base, and scored. Wendy Ho induced a walk, scoring sister Suzanne Ho, and Erica Shellem had an RBI Single. Panther pitcher Julie Herbst pitched two awesome innings, throwing consistent strikes. Sarah Muse and Maggy DiCostanzo's solid flies far into left field made four Panther runs. Sonya Javits's line drive double into left field brought home runners for the Panthers. The bases were loaded with Sweet Potatoes when Panther Marisa Budlong caught a pop-up foul and fired it to first where Stesha Marcon tagged out the runner making it a double play! Both teams were focused and displayed athletic teamanship. It was an energetic and competitive game to watch.
Adobe Black Magic 12 vs. Counterforce Lightning 4
Extra base hits by Black Magicians Corey Chin and Valerie Dohrer broke a 4-4 tie in the 3rd inning, leading Black Magic past Lightning. Magicians Lisa Gilliland and Lily Meryash followed suit, keying a 4-run 4th to seal the victory. Lightning Giselle Moreno's 1st inning RBI single started the Lightning scoring, who tied the game in the 2nd on hits by Adrian Gebhart, Johanna Heyer and Adriana Stevens. Magic pitcher Beatrice Weindel's three second inning Ks kept things in check for the visitors.
Middle Division
Prins Chiropractic Bulldogs 8, Nolo Pickle Express 0
Pickle pitcher Marielle Cohen pitched a solid first inning, hustling a hit ball to Sam Abkin at first for the first out of the game, then striking out two batters. Bulldogs had one hit, but left a runner on second. Similar in the second, with Bulldogs runners on second and third, but no runs scored. Pickle Marielle Cohen made it to second on a gutsy run. In the third, the Bulldogs scored three runs, despite skillful Pickle defense. The Pickles lived up to their name snaring Bulldog Cory Labov between first and second as Pickles Sarah Essex and Roisin Shannon shot the ball back and forth, trying for the out as she slid safely into second. In the fourth, Pickle Julia Martinelli snagged a grounder and took a Bulldog runner out at first as the Bulldogs scored a fourth run.
Impact Fund Maximum Impact 4, Red Oak Realty Rascals 1.
Impact pitchers Sasha Kramer and Clara Obstfeld retired three batters in three innings. Obstfeld fielded two line drives on the mound. Natalia Aldaco's solid skills at first retired two runners. Barbara McCray drove a double down the left field line. Rascal pitcher Brooke Tannahill racked up three strikeouts in two innings. Rascal Lena Nitsan also had a fine day on the mound, assisting all outs in the 4th-two throws to first Kiana Walker and a caught pop fly ball. Defense continued to be solid at first, where Jordan Baker, Katy Robinson and Veronica Timpane made critical outs. Camilla Obata and Gillian Sweeney had line drive singles; Nitsan hit a double into the outfield. Vita Romano scored in the fourth. Cassidy Villeneuve provided enthusiastic bench support while her broken arm continues to heal.
Younger Division
Zonta Club Zooming Zebras 12, On the Beam Leopards, 18
The Zooming Zebras kicked off the season with a well-played game against the Leopards. Zebra first Sarah Lake and pitcher Hannah Schoenberger played great defense to several Leopard base hits, including an impressive line-drive by Nia Willis. Offensively, the Zebras showed their stripes with Kira Traynor landing on base, Claire Harper's RBI and Alehandra Zeiger's double to middle. Defensively, Leopard Imani Bateau-Hiller made two outs at first with the help of throws by pitcher Claire Ramer. The Zebras stayed strong, with Sarah Lake catching a fly ball and tagging a runner for two critical outs, Jasmine Masten's two base hits, Hannah Schoenberger making an out at second and RBI singles by Kira Traynor, Alehandra Zeiger and Alondra Franco.
Five Little Monkeys vs. Vivian Lopez Vipers
Monkey Maggie Scarpa's quick fielding forced an out at first base in the first inning. Viper Sydney Sturgeon smacked the hardest of five hits, for an RBI. Five Little Monkeys' batting was all around impressive, with Emma Steinheimer and Madeleine Barnum each whopping line drives to the outfield. A couple of unassisted fielding plays, one each by Vipers Sammie Chiang and Alyssa Kurtz, bolstered the Viper defense. Margo Friedman sustained the 3rd inning Viper offensive with a clean single. But not much got by Monkey Serene Witherspoon at third base, who fielded two grounders for two forced outs to end the 3rd inning.
Dr. Brehnan's Toothless Tigers v Freidman Brueggemeyer Cougars
In an evenly matched game, the Toothless Tigers scored a three run win over the Cougars. Both teams had a great time as the sun peeked out of the fog just in time for the opening pitch. Cougar Anna Barcellos started out the game with a strong hit. The Toothless Tigers responded with an out at home caught by Ashlyn Albert-Hall. Both teams displayed strong hitting and fielding. Tiger Shannon Riggio-Kerley lit up the field with a solid double followed by a fourth inning double by Tiger Faith Valdez. Cougar Maeve Regis kept the Cougar dugout chanting with sharp hits in the last two innings. Cougar Reyna Fa-Kaji showed strong fielding skills making two outs at first base.
Micro Division
Andronico Bluejays/Autumn Press Stars v Hammond Events Green Gators/Autumn Press Stars
The Bluejays showed impressive skill in their season opener against the Green Gators. The Stars split in two, half playing with the Bluejays and the other half playing with the Gators. Bluejay Maria Barkhurst slammed the ball out of the field and got herself a run. Tayah Blanck showed her skill batting a run and grabbing grounders. Bluejay Lucy Rosenthal gave the team the first and last runs of the game, and her quick catch of a grounder made for an out. First Gator batter Kate Thomson hit a single down center field. Lee Labov, a Gator/Star, showed excellent fielding skills. Gators Clare Bogel, Gabriel Meachum, and Gator/Stars Taryn Woodhall, Grace Duncan and Cara Chinn all hit singles; Hannah Scherzinger hit a double past second base. The game ended with both teams shaking hands in the spirit of fun.
